The Manufacturing Process
High in the altiplano
of the Andes Mountains alpaca farmers raise and care for these gentle animals. Each spring the
farmers shear the herds for their luxurious coats and separate the fleece based on quality. The
fleece is then passed to the fiber producer. For the alpacas that did not survive the winter and
died from natural causes, the entire fleece with hide attached will be used for rug production.
Because alpacas are not killed, rug production is limited creating a supply shortage. Each rug has
over 250 sections blending the most beautiful colors and luxurious fiber. A double reinforced thread
passes through more then 1 millimeter of hide to ensure a durable stitch. The hide is treated in
order to prevent drying out. This hand made process using all natural colors results in a truly
unique product.
For garments the
perfected worsted system turns the fleece into the finest and highest
quality fiber. The fiber is then passed on to the artisans for sweater
production. The artisans and designer work together to conceptualize the
patterns to be incorporated into the garments. Dimensions, colors, and
designs are transferred from paper to end product. The body of the sweater
passes through quality control before the sleeves, collar, borders, and
special applications are finished. The sweater must then pass through
quality control for the second time in order to receive final certification
and display the Alpaca Mountain Trade Company logo of quality.
